In four decades of practice I have developed an architecture rooted in preservation. I believe in the inextricable bond between architecture and context. For me, all architecture is referential; all of us build on the work of past generations in a collaboration across time.
As an example, I served for ten years as Design and Planning Principal for the General Assembly and Conference Buildings at the United Nations Headquarters, first with EYP and later as a consultant. As an integral part of the Capital Master Plan design team, I worked to adapt the UN Headquarters to Twenty-First Century standards while maintaining the visual appearance of this Twentieth Century icon; respecting its materiality.
Over the course of my career, I have designed buildings for a variety of project types, including educational facilities, historic structures, corporate offices and office buildings, and residential buildings ranging from low income housing to luxury apartments and houses.
"Architecture" captures more than just the hardscape of buildings. I have been fortunate to be asked to create total environments, including the design of custom hardware and furniture. I believe in the importance of each and every aspect of the design process, and I work to find an appropriate blend of functional design and aesthetics in every project.
I serve on the Heritage Conservation Committee of the Society of Architectural Historians. As a Member of Manhattan Community Board 8, I am active on the Landmarks and Housing Committees, the Charter Reform Task Force, and am Co-Chair of the Voting Reform Working Group and the Zoning and Development Committee.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in British History from Yale College and a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where I was a Graduate Teaching Fellow, an F. Lewis Dales Fellow and a Schenck-Woodman Competition finalist. I am a member of the American Institute of Architects, a member of the Society of Architectural Historians, a LEED Accredited Professional, and a registered architect in New York and New Jersey.
